Energy Efficiency Solution: Variable Speed Compressor
Business Problem
Montupet UK Limited is based in Dunmurry Belfast, founded in 1989 the number of employees now totals 550. The plant produces 4500 cylinder heads per day and is quality accredited to ISO/TS16949 and ISO14001.
Montupet had six compressors with a total load of 1.2MW; the units had limited controls and were simply switched on or off. As the demand did not match capacity, this resulted in a lot of wasted energy.
Solution
The solution was to install one variable speed compressor that would be used as the main drive that would ensure that the capacity always matched the demand. The cost of compressed air can be as much as 40% of the total electrical costs. By installing one 260KW Variable Speed Compressor together with an operating and control system energy costs were reduced by 50% by tuning the compressors capacity to the air demand.
Explanation
Variable Speed Drive technology mirrors air usage automatically adjusting the motor speed depending on demand. Lower system pressure minimises energy use across the production to reduce energy costs.
